Offseason addition Ramon Humber wears the No. 53 jersey for the New England Patriots, so he is the topic of discussion today as we count down 53 days until the Patriots kickoff 2016.

Size: 5-foot-11, 232 pounds

College: North Dakota State

2015 stats: 41 tackles, sack, pass defended

NFL experience: Seven seasons

Humber originally entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent for the Indianapolis Colts back in 2009. He fought his way through training camp and appeared in all 16 games for the horseshoes that year, starting two games and recording 32 tackles. Humber played on special teams throughout the postseason as well as the Super Bowl.

8 most essential players on Patriots’ roster

The following year, Humber played two games for the Colts before joining team he had just faced in the Super Bowl, the New Orleans Saints. Humber stuck around New Orleans for five more years, just recently departing this past offseason after becoming the longest-tenured defensive player on the Saints’ roster.`

Over the course of his time with the Saints, Humber played primarily on special teams, registering 154 tackles and 3.5 sacks 74 regular season appearances.

Recent installments in Patriots kick-off countdown profile series:

54 days – No. 54 Dont’a Hightower

55 days – Jonathan Freeny

59 days – No. 59 Rufus Johnson

Humber’s only path to the final roster is on special teams. The North Dakota State product hasn’t lasted seven years in the NFL because of his proper linebacker ability; rather, Humber has stuck around as a result of his special teams value. To make the team, Humber must prove to be a more experienced and sound special teamer than the likes of Kamu Grugier-Hill, Elandon Roberts, C.J. Johnson and Rufus Johnson.

Certainly, Humber is a veteran newcomer worth keeping an eye on as training camp action unfolds later this month and into August.
