NFL Rumors: New England Patriots To Take A Receiver In The First Round Of The NFL Draft?

The 2015 NFL draft is days away, and for the New England Patriots, it should be about getting better in the trenches. That’s how I view their needs heading into the draft, as does ESPN Boston’s Mike Reiss.

However Reiss also points out that if a receiver like Nelson Agholor drops to pick 32, the Pats might jump on it.

"One of the interesting Patriots NFL draft storylines for me is how early the team would consider selecting a wide receiver, in part because this is considered another deep, talented class. If Southern Cal receiver Nelson Agholor is available at No. 32, for example, I think that could be enticing to the club, depending on who else might be available. That’s one scenario I’ve played out in mock drafts that wouldn’t shock me, even though I don’t view receiver as a great need when stacked up against guard, defensive tackle, off-the-line linebacker and cornerback."

I have said this entire offseason that just about the only thing that would truly get me angry at Bill Belichick would be if he drafted a wideout in the first two rounds. This is not a need for New England this year, and even if it was, the class is so deep, they could wait until the later rounds to address that area.

If the Patriots want to take a flyer on a project late in the draft, that’s fine by me. Bill Belichick is actually good at drafting receivers late (see: Julian Edelman), and down the road, they could use another young stud to help out this crop of offensive weapons. But for this next season, they are just fine at receiver, as Edelman, Brandon LaFell, Danny Amendola, Brian Tyms, Rob Gronkowski, Scott Chandler, Tim Wright, and even Aaron Dobson will contribute.

We’re closing on the draft, guys. The long offseason wait is just about over.
