Yesterday’s focus was on the 19 cuts the New England Patriots made, but according to Mike Reiss of ESPN Boston, the team also worked out 12 players in advance of those cuts.
Here is how the workouts broke down in terms of position:
Jeff Mathews, McLeod Bethel-Thompson
Running Back: (1)
Wide Receiver: (2)
Armon Binns, Rashad Lawrence
Defensive Line: (3)
Jermelle Cudjo, Hebron Fangupo, Cam Henderson
Deveron Carr, Aaron Hester
I think this is just Bill Belichick doing his job in terms of gaining as much knowledge as he can from around the league, in case he has to add one of these players in an emergency situation. Or perhaps he wants to sign one of them in the near future because he flat-out likes their game. I know the Patriots are thin at linebacker, and from Mike Reiss said, Kevin Reddick is a good special-teams player. We all know the Patriots love guys that can contribute on special-teams, which may give Reddick an opening.
But in all likelihood, the Patriots are just doing their due diligence, so they never get caught with their pants down in a critical situation depth situation later on in the year.
