Today is the day of the practice squad, as teams around the NFL will begin signing players to fill up the 10 player squad. Right now, the New England Patriots have two spots filled, as they have signed running back Jonas Gray, and linebacker Ja’Gared Davis (from Doug Kyed of NESN).
I like both of these moves, particularly signing Gray, as he was extremely impressive throughout the preseason. In fact, I had him on my final roster projection as the Patriots fourth running back, earning the job over Brandon Bolden. But evidently the Pats didn’t feel the same way, as Gray was one of yesterday’s 19 cuts.
However it is important that they were able to retain Gray, specifically for the future. He has a lot of potential, and if New England can develop him properly, he could possibly evolve into a quality starting back for this team.
In other news, the team has also signed defensive lineman Kelcy Quarles, who will (for now) be added to the 53-man roster. The Patriots have a lot of depth at defensive tackle, but as last year taught us, you can never have enough players supporting the middle of that run defense. Quarles is an undrafted free agent out of South Carolina, and according to nepatriotsdraft.com’s Mike Loyko, was a projected fourth-round pick before he ran into some trouble off the field.
