According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Jimmy Garoppolo will be starting, and playing most of Thursday night’s preseason game against the New York Giants.
Jimmy Garoppolo expected to start Thurs vs. Giants and play majority, if not all, of game, Bill Belichick confirmed through team spokesman.

This leads to the obvious question, what about Ryan Mallett? The former Razorback only got a few snaps last week against the Panthers, and this move to start Garoppolo may signal that Mallett is on the trading block.
Sitting Mallett screams of a team looking to prevent injury and trade him. Mallett has proven as much as he can in 4 preseasons

I was hoping the Patriots would move Mallett earlier in the offseason, but evidently they didn’t like any of the offers that were on the table. But if they can something decent in return, I think trading Mallett now would be a fine idea. If they can pull a decent draft pick, or add to a weak area (tight end especially), I would consider that a win for New England.
I love Mallett, but if there is value available, I would be fine in giving the backup job to Garoppolo. We will see how this situation plays out.
