New England Patriots football is finally back!
Tom Brady has paid his dues this week.
Quarterback Ryan Mallett will start tonight’s preseason opener against the Redskins, according to a source.
This isn’t something that hasn’t happened in the past, as per Howe, Brady has missed the preseason opener three times (2005, 2008, 2011). Brady has just shredded the Washington secondary the last three days, so I think this is why Bill Belichick was confident in giving his quarterback a rare night off. Mallett definitely needs to the work more than Brady does.
Ryan Mallett must play well this preseason if he ever wants a starting job in this league. He doesn’t get much playing time during the regular season, so he has to take advantage of the time he gets now. Mallett has had an up and down preseason career, struggling at times with his accuracy, and decision making.
But that all needs to change starting tonight. Reports have said Mallett is having a good camp, and if he can continue his progress into the preseason, a starting job outside of this Patriots organization may be in his future.
