New England Patriots DL Sealver Siliga To Get Tests On Hand, Will Miss Time

To this point, the New England Patriots have been extremely lucky on the injury front. Contrary to last season, there haven’t been any major injuries, and not many minor ones either.

However in yesterday’s joint practice with the Redskins, defensive tackle Sealver Siliga hurt his left hand, and did not return to practice. Mike Reiss of ESPN Boston reports he returned to Boston to receive tests on the hand. He is expected to miss some time.

Not good news, but not the worst, either. According to all reports, Siliga was having a nice camp, building off of a solid end to the 2013 season. He is essentially a Vince Wilfork clone, and was vying for a top backup spot, or possibly even starting alongside Wilfork.

With Siliga sidelined, look for Chris Jones and Joe Vellano to get more playing time this preseason. Both of these guys were forced into action last year (like Siliga), and all things considered, played pretty well. Jones is much quicker than Vellano, as he actually racked up six sacks in only 13 games played last season.

Hopefully Sealver Siliga’s injury is not too serious, because the Patriots will need that kind of depth to help their run defense in the coming months.
