New England Patriots Release WR Cole Stanford

The New England Patriots released wide receiver Cole Stanford yesterday, which brings their roster count back down to 89.

Trying to make this team as a wideout is going to be extremely tough, as the competition in that area is stiff. From Mike Reiss, here is the Patriots projected wide receiver depth chart:

Julian Edelman
Aaron Dobson (PUP)
Danny Amendola
Kenbrell Thompkins
Brandon LaFell
Josh Boyce
Jeremy Gallon (PUP)
Wilson Van Hooser
Brian Tyms
Derrick Johnson
(Special teams captain Matthew Slater also takes reps here).

There may not be a ridiculous amount of talent in this group, but they all work hard, and know their roles within this offense. I think the wide receivers will be one of the better positional groups for the Patriots in 2014. There are a number of different directions the Patriots could go in regards to filling that final roster spot, but adding a linebacker, or a tight end may be necessary in these coming weeks. Although another defensive lineman for the Patriots is never a bad idea.
