Alfonzo Dennard Returns To Practice, Comes Off PUP List

The Patriots finished up their fifth practice of training camp today, and in some good injury news, cornerback Alfonzo Dennard returned to the practice field.

One of the biggest strengths of this Pats’ defense looks like it will be the depth of the cornerback position, and getting Dennard back only reinforces that notion. Dennard may not have the size of Brandon Browner, or the talent of Darrelle Revis, but he is a feisty corner, who knows how to cover one on one.

With Browner suspended for the first four games of the season, the starting job opposite Revis will be up for grabs. As of right now, Logan Ryan has the edge over Dennard, simply because he has been on the field this entire offseason. Ryan is a talented young corner, who may end up being much better than Dennard. However he is young, and will have to prove he can put together two solid seasons together over the course of the next few months.

Nevertheless, it is great to see that Dennard is back on the field, as he will play an integral role in the success of the 2014 Patriots. With all of the focus on Revis and Browner, smart quarterbacks will begin to target Logan Ryan and Alfonzo Dennard, and if the Pats want to have an elite defense, they must step up.
