New England Patriots Claim RB Tyler Gaffney

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the New England Patriots have claimed running back Tyler Gaffney off of waivers. Gaffney is a former Carolina Panther, who recently tore his lateral meniscus.

Gaffney won’t be able to play for the Pats this season, so this is essentially Bill Belichick stealing him away from Carolina. The Panthers decided not to immediately place him on IR, and Belichick is making him pay.

So is this another instance where Belichick is breaking an ‘unwritten rule’? Possibly. But he knows how vital depth is in the NFL, so when he sees an opportunity to snag someone that may help in the future, I don’t think he has a problem with taking it. Gaffney is a solid talent, who is tough in running the ball, and was very productive it college. However others might not feel the same way, so prepare for a bit of criticism directed towards Belichick over the next few days.

Gaffney carried the ball 486 times in college, totaling 2,500 rushing yards, and 37 total touchdowns.
