The New England Patriots and free-agent tight end Nate Byham have agreed to terms on a contract, according to a league source. Byham will fill the 90th and final spot on the roster, pending a physical.
The Pats are thin at the tight end position, with Rob Gronkowski recovering from knee surgery, there is no guarantee he will be able to participate in the majority of camp. So even though Byham may never play a down in New England, it is good to have some depth to work with in training camp, so the rest of the offense doesn’t suffer.
As Reiss mentions, Byham is mainly a blocking tight end, much like Michael Hoomanawanui, who serves as the primary backup to Gronkowski.
In his three year career, Byham has totaled 11 receptions, 83 yards, and one touchdown.
