Logan Mankins Is The New England Patriots Most Overrated Player

Every offseason Pete Prisco of CBS Sports releases a list of who he thinks is the most overrated, and underrated players of each team. Prisco says that guard Logan Mankins is the most overrated New England Patriots player this year, and lists safety Devin McCourty as the most underrated.

Overrated: G Logan Mankins  I put him here last summer, and I think he deserves to be back again. He is considered a top guard, and he didn’t play like it last season.

Underrated: S Devin McCourty  He has made a nice transition from corner to safety, showing off the range you need on the back end.

Does Mankins deserve to be called the most overrated player in New England? Yes. Absolutely.

Mankins is extremely popular among the fans, and the media, but he simply is not the player he used to be.

I am not saying that he has dropped to ‘below average’. Not even close. But as Prisco mentions, he is supposed to be an elite offensive lineman, and he did not play like it at all in 2013. He is still decent in the run game, even showing flashes of that dominant monster we used to see. But when you watch him pass block, it is pretty obvious that he isn’t nearly as consistent as he used to be. I think we all remember that eventful fourth and three in last year’s AFC title game.

Even though I believe Mankins is in fact the Pats most overrated player, that doesn’t mean I want him out this year. He is still a fine left guard, but not to the extent of calling him elite. He helps anchor a solid left side of the line, although he is aided by having one of the best left tackles in the game in Nate Solder on his side.

In a few years (possibly even in 2015), his salary will be too much for New England to carry, and they may have to let him go. And to be completely honest, I really wouldn’t mind.

Well that’s red rag to a bull. That said, I don’t think that Mankins, with the pro-bowl appearances and team mate respect he has will be particularly worried that one gain-sayer wishes to suggest he’s overrated before the pre-season has even started.

    • MikeInMaine

Yeah; he’s looking over his shoulder now. Too bad you don’t like that.

      • John Wesley Harding

Anyone with any brains think BB would keep him if he wasn’t productive, I didn’t think so.

    • Cyrus Geller

His contract situation is much like Wilfork’s was. Unless he wants to take a big pay-cut soon, he will be gone.

  • John Wesley Harding

I totally disagree, he is older and not like he once was but he’s the toughest guy on the team and plays 110% every game injured or not and TB trusts him for protection . Actually I never remember anyone touting him last year so how could he be overrated? THE most overrated, to me, is Amendola, He came with all this hoopla and turned into an expensive huge mistake

    • MikeInMaine

Well you’re a TOTAL idiot then. Amendola wasn’t even CLOSE to being a “mistake”!!! He ripped his freakin’ abductor muscles clean off, you MORON, and then kept on playing, and still played like a BEAST after he got HALF healed, you knucklehead. THAT is being the toughest guy on the field! You just don’t know football, and don’t like Amendola because of it. Two years ago, BOTH times the Rams faced the 49ers, the 49ers couldn’t figure out a way to stop Danny. He nearly single-handedly DESTROYED them – all day long. He is VERY special, but hasn’t had the benefit of having great trainers and coaches to teach him how to play a tad bit smarter, thus allowing him to ease up just a smidgeon. He’s had very bad “LUCK” only because he’s ALWAYS going 200 mph, you uninformed dope.

      • Cataclysm Bitb

Your argument would be more valid if you didn’t attack John every other sentence. Amendola did very well I the Saints game until he got smacked in the head, and I don’t care who you are most people would act that way if they got hit in the head like he did.

        • John Wesley Harding

So he’s not overrated cause he played well for a while in the Saints game, that doesn’t cut it for me.

      • Cyrus Geller

Amendola is injury prone. There is no denying that. Hopefully he can stay relatively healthy this year to show how talented of a player he really is.

        • John Wesley Harding

Look, this pissing contest is useless. Looks like you and Mike are buddies so I’ll end my rant by saying all this is, is opinions. You and your expert friend think Mankins has declined so much he is overrated, although I’ve never heard that he is as good as he was at 25 from anyone, My opinion is that Amendola came as an upgrade to WW and his past injuries were just “bad luck”, I think he was and is overrated and a bust. My hope is I’m completely wrong and you two can say I told you so. He makes some great catches and I hope he plays 14 games goes into the playoffs as the number 1 receiver catches over 100 passes for over 1000 yds, 35 TDs and catches the winning TD pass in the SB,and they give him the MVP trophy. I really don’t care if I’m wrong I just don’t like some arrogant jerk from Maine telling me I can’t have my opinion and answer him in the way I would like. Who knows maybe you 2 are wrong.

      • John Wesley Harding

So I’m called a total idiot and a moron, etc. but when I reply it is taken down, I didn’t even swear which I am prone to do. So sweetheart, you may have manlove for “Danny”, your on a first name basis? and he may be VERY special to you and he may have had some great games TWO YEARS AGO but he comes to the pats overrated. He makes a few great catches I agree but he can’t play a whole season, I guess cause of “Bad Luck” He caught 3 passes in the playoffs, granted for 70+ yards but was never a factor. He’s over paid and overrated.
BTW you most-knowledgeable, expert of football I said Mankins was the toughest on the team not the league and I do agree he is not as good as he was but he is better than most at his position.

      • John Wesley Harding

HMM, just reading again, when was this BEAST play again? Man you really love this guy.

    • Cyrus Geller

Amendola is not overrated at all. He played through a groin injury all year long, and still managed to get open fairly consistently. When healthy, he is just as good as Edelman, if not better.

      • John Wesley Harding

That’s wonderful, I love the when healthy thing cause pretty much that goes for all players except Amendola is hurt more than most players. I’m sure Edelman had some injuries through the season but some players can suck it up and their bodies can take more abuse.

        • Cyrus Geller

Edelman missed five games in ’09, three in ’11, and seven in ’12.

          • John Wesley Harding

But when we needed him in 2013 cause TB didn’t trust anyone else he came thru. We talking overrated before last year or about last year and the present?

  • MikeInMaine

I must have been a year ahead of most people; recognizing his decline THREE years ago. I’d love to see him lose his position.

  • Corey Szczebak

Pete Prisco is the most overrated sports writer at CBS Sports. This is a stupid negative article. Logan Mankins isnt what he used to be, but he’s still one of the best guards in the NFL. Remember when “one of the best Left Tackles in the league” in Nate Solder went down with an injury last year? Who replaced him beautifully? Logan Mankins. The Pats had the leagues worst rated Center and one of the worst rated Guards ( Dan Connolly) last season and lost their right tackle Vollmer for the year. Mankins was working overtime in making sure Brady had at least 2 seconds to throw the ball. He’ll be better this year now that he has some help.

    • MikeInMaine

This is partly true. Prisco is a moron, but Mankins has declined something fricken wicked. He isn’t even close to being one of the best anymore. Unless you consider being rated about 25th as a good thing. Of course he’ll do better with better support, and hopefully his age and decline won’t HURT us down the stretch. I’m worried big-time about this.

      • Cyrus Geller

        Bingo.

    • Cyrus Geller

Logan Mankins is overrated as an offensive guard. People still view him as elite, and it is pretty obvious that he is no longer in that class. He is tough as nails, a great leader, and still a fine player. But not elite, which makes him overrated.

  • Steve T

No he isn’t what he was 4-5 years ago, but who is? I think you are confusing Logan with that stiff that plays next to him. Solder gets beat on passing downs very often against good players. When Mankins moved to left tackle, while Soldier was out, the pass blocking improved. And that’s Logan on the side of Kline, a rookie. In all honesty, Kline delivered, rookie or not. Pete, offensive lineman don’t get better in their 30′s.

  • alh

Oh man Cyrus! You say that Amendola is at least as good as Edelman when he’s fit and therefore not overrated? If that’s true then perhaps you’ll be picking up the bill for his next rehab so you can ensure we (the critics) don’t miss the value of the Patriots most physically vulnerable wing-man. Edelman’s USP to the franchise last year was the fact that he was ‘bulletproof’. If Amendola has an ever-present season then you might find justification for your views but since it would seem that he is yet to play a full season since entering the League I’d say that the point you are making is a moot one.

  • ASC

He is on the down end of his career

  • Chris Hamlet

Even if he has dropped off,he has been a Patriot his entire career. He should retire one.you can call me a sucker if you want but I believe in loyality. We should keep him because he is part of the Pats fam.
