This story has already been blown way out of proportion, but it is news, and it certainly is interesting, especially in a time where the only thing going on in the NFL world is simple minicamps.
Greg Bedard of MMQB wrote a story today about Browns coach Mike Pettine (it’s very well done, I highly suggest you give it a read). And about halfway through, there are a few nuggets on the Jets playbooks, and how Tom Brady bragged that the Pats had possession of a few. (This could explain why New England is so dominant over the Jets recently).
Pettine told a story of how, at Wes Welker’s wedding, Tom Brady bragged a little bit to Jets outside linebackers coach Mike Smith, who was Welker’s college roommate, that the Patriots may or may not have had possession of a couple Jets defensive playbooks.
“It didn’t shock me because Rex would give them out like candy anyway,” Pettine said. “He gave one out to [Alabama coach Nick] Saban and I was like, ‘Don’t you know Saban and Bill [Belichick] are pretty good friends? I have a feeling it’s going to end up in New England.’”
Now as Pettine said, this shouldn’t be that big of a story, as playbooks are passed around all the time. Hell, if you wanted, you could even buy one yourself if you wanted.
Nevertheless, it was an interesting piece of information on an otherwise “slow” news day, and it will definitely keep fans talking for a little while.
