Coming into this offseason, one of the biggest story-lines we were going to monitor on this Patriots defense was how the second safety position would unfold. They already have one of the best safeties starting on one side in Devin McCourty, but there was a lot of uncertainty surrounding Duron Harmon, Tavon Wilson, and even Patrick Chung, as all three of these guys could potentially end up starting next to McCourty.
However as minicamp has unfolded, according to the media, it has become clear that Harmon is the current winner in this competition, which in my opinion, is the best thing for the team.
We’re declaring Duron Harmon the winner of the safety competition to start alongside Devin McCourty. There were two side sessions during practice when Darrelle Revis, Brandon Browner, McCourty and Harmon worked alone with defensive backs coach Josh Boyer.
Harmon flashed a lot of potential last year, and now that he has another offseason under his belt, I think he could really explode onto the scene come September. He has a good sense of the game, and he has the athletic skills needed to make the necessary plays.
In addition to this, Harmon has the luxury of learning next to McCourty, who will definitely be able to help him learn the ropes of playing the safety position in the NFL.

“I’m approaching it just like last year — preparing like being a starter because you never know your opportunity and when it will come. It came last year — I started three games last year — and I think because I prepared like a starter I was prepared to play in the games and do well,”
