New England Patriots Sign Undrafted Free Agent Jeremy Deering

Oct 10, 2013; Louisville, KY, USA; Rutgers Scarlet Knights defensive back Jeremy Deering (18) breaks up a pass intended for Louisville Cardinals wide receiver Michaelee Harris (2) during the second half at Papa John

According to Dan Duggan, beat reporter for, the New England Patriots have signed Jeremy Deering, out of Rutgers.

The Pats have showed that adding depth to the safety position is a focus of theirs this offseason, and even though Devin McCourty and Duron Harmon will probably end up starting the 2014 season, it never hurts to have depth in case of injuries. Duggan mentions that Deering is a versatile player, which definitely had to a reason for the Pats interest. He also made a comparison to special-teams ace Matthew Slater, who is also currently in New England.

A 4.33 40 is good speed, and if he were to make the final roster, I think he would play a big role on special teams, where speed is a necessity.
