According to ‘Draft Insider’, the New England Patriots will look to draft a replacement for backup quarterback Ryan Mallett this May.

The feeling league wide is the Patriots will take a quarterback at some point in the draft as they expect to lose Ryan Mallett at the end of next season

The Pats have met with a lot of quarterback prospects over the course of the offseason, and while the top guys will be out of reach (Manziel, Bridgewater, Bortles), there are plenty of talented guys that will be available in the later rounds.

I personally like Zach Mettenberger, the former LSU Tiger, the most. He has a ton of arm talent, and while he didn’t have the “flashy” career of a Manziel, or even a McCarron, he put together a quality two (technically three) year career.

If Mettenberger is available on day three, I think Bill Belichick and company should jump at the opportunity to grab him. Even though Mallett hasn’t played much, he really is a quality backup to Tom Brady, and replacing him will be tough no matter what.

You know its always hard to see clearly what the Pats or should I say Bill will do, just when you think youve got him figured out he pulls a 180…and completely fools people. I do believe theyll draft a QB but whether it’s with any urgency we just dont know. If they feel this is the draft class, “the year” to draft their next Franchise QB then I’d expect Bill to move Up in the draft & get his man, (next years class doesnt look nearly as good). If they feel they dont have to draft the next Franchise guy then Id expect them to make a selection in the 5th round (give or take) and get a guy like Savage, who Bill has familarity with when he was at Rutgers (graduated from Pitt after transfer). Savage has a big arm like Mallett but is said to be quite intelligent and just needs more time because he only started 1 year I believe. IMO if Bill doesnt move up to get a Bortles or Bridgewater (I hope they stay away from Manziel) then he will indeed pick up someone in the mid rounds.
