According to Nick Underhill of masslive.com, the Patriots could still sign free agent Will Smith.
A recent visit with the team ended without a signed contract, but the Patriots remain in the mix to sign him, according to a source. This confirmation comes after ProFootballTalk.com reported Tuesday that New England is the favorite to sign Smith.
Who knows how much Smith has left in the tank, but I think this would a low risk, high reward type of situation for the Pats. He won’t demand a lot of money, and he may be able to turn back the clock and give Bill Belichick that needed veteran pass rushing presence on the edge.
Here is what Underhill had to say on where Smith would potentially fit in Foxboro:
If Smith were to join the Patriots, he would likely serve as the third pass rusher behind Chandler Jones and Rob Ninkovich, who played more than 90 percent of the defensive snaps last season. Michael Buchanan initially filled that role last season but was replaced by Andre Carter, who signed prior to Week 8.
