NFL Mock Draft: Dee Ford To The Patriots?

CBS Sports’ Pat Kirwan released a mock draft a few days ago, and he has the Patriots taking Dee Ford, a pass rusher coming out of Auburn.

The Patriots could take a tight end like Jace Amaro, which would help the inside passing game but Ford has hybrid pass rush skills and they need more help in this area.

I personally would prefer to see the Pats go after a tight end, but I agree with Kirwan’s assessment of New England’s need for another edge rusher. Chandler Jones and Rob Ninkovich are terrific starters, but the lack of another pass rusher really hurt the Patriots in 2013. They need someone that can not only spell Jones and Ninkovich (those two played 95% of the defensive snaps last year), but put pressure on the quarterback at the same time.

Ford isn’t a perfect prospect, but he has shown that he can get after the opposing signal caller. Adding someone with Ford’s potential could really help get Bill Belichick’s front seven to an elite level.

I agree that the Pats need someone to spell Ninky & Chandler BUT not a starter & I actually see them drafting an OLB over a DE or a guy that falls in between but IMHO it will NOT be in the 1st round. They must get a starting Tight End & that can only be accomplished (honestly) in the first two rounds. There will be plenty of decent TE’s throughout the draft but not day 1 Starters you can plug in instantly (as long as he’s smart enough to learn the play book). Whether that TE is taken in the 1st round or 2nd depends on 1. Whether the Pats are serious about drafting 1 of these top QB’s this year, 2. Just how the board shakes out ahead of them.
I plan on writing an article about it but I’ll share a sneak peak… IMO if they want to draft a QB this year and if they like Bortles, Bridgewater… watch for the Pats to make a big trade up the draft, perhaps with STL- who has two #1 picks this year (#2 overall) & no salary cap space. If this happens then their interest in all these QB’s was obviously real, if they dont move up at all then it was a smoke screen…

I doubt the Pats trade up to grab a QB. Brady has at least three good years left, probably more. And I think there are plenty of solid backup quarterbacks that will be available late in the draft this year. I do agree on the TE situation. I love Jace Amaro, would love to see BB go after him.

I agree about the QB situation but you never know with Bill, he’ll drive you insane trying to figure him out. Wiggy said today that he believes his old team will draft a Safety in the 1st round ( I tend to agree). Can you imagine us having a player with the first name of HA HA? LOL, that name kills me.
I see the Pats going TE in the 2nd round, so Amaro should be gone. IMO theyll look at and pick 1 of : Seferian-Jenkins, Fiedorowicz, Niklas. If not their fools…
