The Patriot Way – New England Patriots News 3/31

Welcome to The Patriot Way – New England Patriots News and links from around the web

- Field Yates has a breakdown of Vince Wilfork’s new contract.  If Wilfork can return to pre-Achilles injury form, he will remain in New England for three years.  I would love to see Wilfork retire a Patriot.

- The extension for Wilfork means we can discuss who else deserves an extension.  Personally, I feel locking up Solder, Vereen, and McCourty are top priorities.  Solder is an above-average left tackle with room to improve, Vereen is a dynamic playmaker on an offense that needs more of those players, not less, and McCourty is the only consistent player in an ever changing secondary.  All home-grown, all need to be signed.  Signing Revis long-term would be phenomenal, but he is operating on a different timeline than the other players, specifically the young players.  He will also be more expensive….much more expensive.

- SI.com has a piece about the most improved units around the league, and not surprisingly, the secondary of the Patriots heads the list.  The additions of corners Darrelle Revis and Brandon Browner certainly make the secondary a much more revered group, at least on paper.  In terms of depth 1 through 5, the Patriots have to be close to the top of the league at corner, and Devin McCourty played at an all-pro level in 2013 at free safety.

- The biggest news from late Friday was running back LeGarrette Blount signing with the Pittsburgh Steelers.  Losing Blount hurts more from a fan perspective than anything, as he is a nice power back but can be replaced, likely through the draft.  We’ll always have ‘Blount force trauma.’
