The Patriots re-signed wide receiver Julian Edelman today, in a move that gave quarterback Tom Brady at least one reliable weapon for 2014.
Edelman has a great rapport with Brady, and while I wouldn’t classify him as an “elite” receiver, he certainly has talent. His ability to make people miss after the catch is probably his best trait, but he also knows how to get open versus any kind of defense. Whether it is man coverage, or zone coverage, he found himself open for a good portion of the 2013 season.
With this said, he isn’t nearly as “explosive” as someone like Emmanuel Sanders. This is why Bill Belichick should still attempt to upgrade the receiver position this offseason. Having Edelman, Danny Amendola, Aaron Dobson, Kenbrell Thompkins, and Josh Boyce is fine, but that is the exact same group New England had last year. Last year’s offense wasn’t that great, and they definitely have to continue to upgrade.
But re-signing Edelman was definitely a good move. The Pats couldn’t afford to let one of the few offensive bright spots of 2013 walk away, and they finally locked him up.
