According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, both Jairus Byrd, and Alterraun Verner just signed new contracts in New Orleans, and Tampa Bay. This officially takes the Patriots out of the running for both, although I don’t think they were ever in serious contention for Byrd.

The more more important deal for New England, is the one Verner signed. He will be getting $26.5 million over four years, with $14 million guaranteed. That is roughly what was expected, which is a change from Vontae Davis’ ridiculous contract signed earlier in the day. If Verner is getting roughly $6.6 million a year, then I think Talib will be asking for something similar to that. He is a better corner, but he is also more injury-prone, and still has that off the field baggage.

Mike Loyko of has said that he thinks the Patriots are offering Talib roughly what they were offering last year, which is a little less than what Verner is getting.

With Tampa signing Verner, this may be a sign of them trying preparing for Darrell Revis to depart, and even though it is unlikely, the Patriots may make a play on Revis once he is released by the Bucs.
