Re-signing cornerback Aqib Talib is one of the top priorities for the Patriots this offseason, but according to Bleacher Report’s Chris Simms, the Washington Redskins are going to be “a major player” in the pursuit of Talib. This doesn’t necessarily mean that it is a foregone conclusion that he will be playing for the Skins next year, but everybody around the league knows how hard it is to out-pay Daniel Snyder.
Washington is in desperate need of some help in the defensive backfield, as they were ranked 20th in the league in pass defense in 2013. Talib is probably the best corner available in this year’s crop of free agents, so it makes sense for the Skins to go after the former Jayhawk.
But I don’t expect Bill Belichick and company to let him go without a fight, especially since there were reports of them meeting at the Combine last month. Talib’s presence on the New England defense instantly made their secondary one of the best in the NFL, but as we witnessed in the AFC Championship game, when he is out, they morph back into a group that would struggle stopping Tim Tebow (okay, maybe not that bad).
