You know it’s the offseason when the biggest news of the day is the Patriots re-signing their long snapper. As originally reported by ESPN Boston’s Mike Reiss, Danny Aiken was given a one year contract today.
This isn’t huge news, but it does lock up the three Patriot specialists for 2014 (Gostkowski, Allen, Aiken).
In other news, free agent to be Brandon Spikes spoke on NFL Network today, and his comments really drive home the point of him not returning to Foxboro for next season.
Spikes said “both sides could benefit from a fresh start”, (with the two sides being him, and the Patriots organization). Here are a few more quotes from Spikes (via ESPN Boston, and Field Yates).
On his health, and possibility of returning to New England:
“I would never say never, you know, everybody says you never want to burn a bridge, but I just feel like both sides could benefit from a fresh start.
“That being said, in free agency, I just feel like I’m out here, I’m available, I’m 100 percent. Any team that is willing to take a chance on me, they’re going to get a playmaker, a guy that’s very aggressive on the field, looking to be a difference-maker.”
Whoever ends up signing Spikes will be getting a great run stopper, but his pass defense will haunt them as the season moves forward. I loved seeing him compete on the field with the Pats, but it is definitely time to move on.
