The Patriots are finally making noise this offseason…sort of. According to Adam Schefter, wide receiver Julian Edelman met with the Pats today, and they talked about a potential contract.
Edelman had a career best 2013 campaign, catching 105 balls, which was good for fourth in the NFL. Along with cornerback Aqib Talib, Edelman is one of the top priorities for the Pats this offseason, as his production last year carried Tom Brady’s offense.
In my opinion, I don’t think New England would be missing much if Edelman left. He played well last year, but he definitely can be replaced. His athletic skills aren’t “off the charts”, and his receiving skills certainly aren’t elite. I have been pulling for the Pats to go after Emmanuel Sanders for quite some time, mainly because of how explosive he can be. Edelman did a lot of things for the Patriots last season, but he doesn’t add that deep threat element to the team. Sanders has shown that he can blow by one on one coverage, and I would love to see him in Foxboro for the 2014 season.
However some people feel like retaining Edelman is necessary for New England to advance to the Super Bowl, and Bill Belichick may be one of those people. We’ll see if the two sides come to an agreement over the next couple of days.
