There was a flurry of moves today in the NFL, with a few of them concerning the Patriots. The first was the release of veteran safety Steve Gregory, and the second was the Seahawks cutting defensive tackle Red Bryant.
The Patriots have shown interest in Bryant in the past, and I see no reason why they won’t pursue him again. Adding depth to the defensive tackle position is one of the top priorities for the Patriots this offseason, even if Vince Wilfork and Tommy Kelly return 100% healthy. They ranked 30th in the league in run defense last year, largely because of the injuries to the front four.
Bryant’s numbers don’t look that great, but he is cut from the mold of a Vince Wilfork. He is a big guy, and he is there to take up blockers, and shut down an opposing offense’s running game. Could you imagine the combination of Wilfork and Bryant on the inside? It would be just about impossible to run on the Pats if those two were in the game.
I don’t know how much money Bryant will demand, but if the Patriots don’t have to break the bank, I would really like to see them bring Bryant to Foxboro.
