One of the many story-lines for the New England Patriots this offseason, is the amount of money they currently have available. They only have about $7 million to spend, which isn’t a high number. But there are a lot of things that they can do to gain some cap space, with one of them being extending safety Devin McCourty.

McCourty’s 2014 cap hit is scheduled to be right around $5 million. McCourty is a terrific safety, and I think New England will be looking to not only lower his cap hit, but extend him so he will be in Foxboro for a long time.

Ben Volin of the Boston Globe reported late last night that the Patriots haven’t talked with McCourty about a potential extension yet, although he adds that he expects the extension to get done.

If Aqib Talib is the most important piece in the back end, then McCourty is a close second. He has rapidly developed into one of the best free safeties this league has to offer, and I hope Bill Belichick and company decide to keep him in New England for as long as they can. There aren’t a lot of safeties that posses the skills of a Devin McCourty, and even though lock-down corners are hyped as the biggest key to having a successful pass defense, obtaining smart safeties is important as well.
