According to Jeff Howe of the Boston Herald, the New England Patriots will be meeting with Aqib Talib this week in Indianapolis. As Howe said in that tweet, Talib is set to become a free agent, but the Patriots hold exclusive negotiating rights until March 11th.
This is great news for the team, because as far as I’m concerned, Talib should be their number one free agent priority this offseason. Yes, he did miss the majority of the last two AFC Championship games because of injury, but he brings such a great defensive presence to the table, that I think the Pats will be able to look over his injury prone past, and lock him up. When Talib is on the field, the Patriots boast one of the best defensive backfields in the league. But as we saw in the AFC Championship, when he is out, they instantly become a sub-par group, that can be exposed by good quarterbacks. I am not saying that they should break the bank, but if the two sides can come to a reasonable agreement, New England shouldn’t waste any time in re-signing Talib.
In his six year career, Talib has totaled 23 interceptions, while taking four of them back for touchdowns.
