One of the biggest weaknesses of the 2013 New England Patriots, was the interior of the offensive line. Center Ryan Wendell was obviously at the center of this (no pun intended), and I don’t think he will be back for the 2014 season. Wendell is undersized, as he is a mere 300 pounds, and up until last season, he made up for it with his scrappy play, and sound technique. But it all fell apart over the last couple of months, in both the passing game, and the running game. He did have a few good games, but it wasn’t a long enough stretch to make me a believer, especially when he is the second most important offensive lineman on the team (aside from left tackle). I don’t know how Bill Belichick and company will go about re-stocking the center position, but I sure hope they bring in someone that can overpower defensive tackles, and direct the offensive line in the passing game. Keeping Tom Brady upright is the number one priority in Foxboro, and say what you want about the injuries Brady’s weapons suffered, but the offensive line play was a big reason why they didn’t end up hoisting the Lombardi Trophy at the end of the year.
