Chris Mortensen of ESPN.com reported earlier today that Patriots’ linebackers Brandon Spikes was placed on IR earlier this week because of some off the field issues, that included being late to a team meeting on January third. However Jeff Howe, of the Boston Herald, claims that this is not true.
Howe tweeted this a little while ago, and it was followed up by a well written piece, which can be found here. We can’t know for sure which report is correct, but no matter what the reason for Spikes being placed on the IR was, I think he has played his final game in a New England uniform. Many thought that he wouldn’t be back before these reports surfaced, but now I think it is a certainty that he won’t be back.
Spikes has a legit knee injury, which has visibly hindered him over the second half of the season. He has still brought a lot of energy and passion to the defense, but a lot of people think that he really wasn’t helping the New England defense too much. I personally think that having Dane Fletcher and Jamie Collins in the game tonight will help the Pats much more than if Spikes was healthy, because of their respective pass coverage skills.
