Key injuries have been the norm in Foxboro over this past year, and today another player bit the dust, as linebacker Brandon Spikes was played on season ending injured reserve. Spikes had been dealing with a pretty significant knee injury over the last couple of weeks, and his performance on the field was definitely suffering.
While this injury certainly hurts the Pats, it is not nearly as bad as losing the likes of Vince Wilfork, or Jerod Mayo. Spikes is a terrific run stopper, but he is a big liability in pass defense, especially with his recent knee problems. The Patriots next game against the Colts will probably require them to go into their sub packages a lot, where Spikes generally is on the bench, even when healthy. Jamie Collins and Dane Fletcher are solid in pass coverage, which is something that New England will need this Saturday night, as they welcome Andrew Luck to town.
Another interesting aspect of this move, is how it affects Spikes’ contract situation. He will be looking for a new deal this offseason, and one of the biggest debates among Patriots fans, has been whether or not the team should keep number 55. As I mentioned before, he is one of the best in the NFL against the run, but his horrible pass defense may lead to his departure this offseason.
