Us Patriots fans usually can’t rely on the Pats players to provide us with interesting quotes (they learn from their charming coach), but today a rare juicy quote came out of New England, as tight end D.J. Williams talked about how difficult it is to pick up the Patriots offensive terminology.
“It’s like trying to pick up Spanish. You know this offense is very attractive…and if you found a very attractive Hispanic lady, you’d pick it up pretty quick.”
That isn’t exactly how Bill Belichick would put it, but it is nice to see a Patriots player finally acknowledge that their playbook is extremely tough to learn. We have seen countless examples of an offensive player come into New England expected to produce, and simply flop out because they couldn’t grasp what the offense was doing. Chad Johnson headlines the group, because of his exceptional track record, and his overall talent as a wide receiver. Johnson was supposed to be that next Randy Moss for the Pats, instead, he had 15 receptions for 276 yards and one touchdown all year long.
Obviously we are not expecting Williams to come in and become the next Rob Gronkowski, but I like his attitude, and given that he knows the playbook is complex, maybe he will be one of the few to pick it up, and play well in Foxboro.
