Welcome to the November 29, 2013 edition of The Patriot Way. Hope you all enjoyed a Thanksgiving Day with your family and loved ones.
Today we got news from Patriots.com that, after missing Thursday’s participation day, Alfonzo Dennard was back on the practice field on Friday. This is good news for Dennard and the New England Patriots, as Dennard appeared to aggravate his knee injury in the second quarter against the Broncos this past Sunday. He is currently questionable for Sunday’s game against the Texans, but with Logan Ryan adequately stepping into Dennard’s place at cornerback, there should be no immediate rush to get him back.
As far as those players who will not be suiting up, Mike Reiss from ESPN Boston has reported that Aaron Dobson (foot), Marcus Cannon (ankle), and Michael Hoomanawanui knee) have all been ruled out. Furthermore, Aqib Talib (hip), Steve Gregory (thumb), and the aforementioned Dennard are all questionable.
Finally, Rant Sports ran an article today that highlighted the production out of punter, Ryan Allen, as he has stepped into the shoes of Zoltan Mesko. One interesting statistic to take out of this piece is that while Mesko was relatively productive during his stint in New England and averaged a net punt of 37.9 yards, Allen currently holds a higher net average at 39.7 yards. Moreover, Allen’s 46.0 total yards per punt average ranks him 13th among active kickers in the NFL. Left-footed punters make it more difficult for return men to field the ball, due to the opposite trajectory off the kicker’s foot than that of right-footed kickers – one reason Belichick likely decided to keep Allen around (along with the obvious salary cap savings).
So there you have it. Stay tuned for the next edition of The Patriot Way, as we look forward to Sunday’s matchup against the Houston Texans.
