Shane Vereen was expected to be a big contributor to this New England Patriots offense this year, especially with the talented Danny Woodhead leaving over the offseason. After one game, it appeared that this would be the case, after Vereen racked up 159 total yards against the Buffalo Bills. However his production would be delayed after we found out that he broke his wrist in that game, which sidelined him for two and a half months. But according to Ian Rapoport of NFL.com, the Patriots are expected to activate him from the IR/designated to return list, for tomorrow night’s clash with the Panthers.
Vereen’s return would benefit the Patriots in more ways than I can count. He is an explosive back, who can come in and play on whichever down he is needed, and his ability to win one on one matchups in the passing game is Darren Sproles-like. He also provides Tom Brady with a security blanket on passing downs, something that he hasn’t had for quite some time. I am not expecting Vereen to put up amazing numbers tomorrow night, but I definitely think that his presence on the field will help the Pats offense produce, as they attempt to beat the second ranked Carolina defense.
