Because this week’s game is on Monday, the New England Patriots held a practice today, giving the team some reps on a day where they normally sit back and relax. According to reports, the only two missing Patriots were cornerback Alfonzo Dennard, and safety Steve Gregory. Both have been listed on the injury report, Dennard with a knee injury, and obviously Gregory with his broken thumb.
Gregory has missed practice all week, which does not point to him playing this week in Carolina. However Dennard’s absence is a little more surprising, given the the fact that he has practiced all week, and he has played in every game thus far in 2013. But if he indeed has a “serious” knee injury, then this is the week for him to miss. The Panthers are a run-first offense, largely due to their 28th ranked passing attack. Dennard would be missed, but not nearly as much as if New England were playing a team that throws the ball often.
I do not know if missing this practice will in fact keep Dennard out of Monday’s game, but my main point is, if he were to miss a game, this would be a good one to miss. I also am assuming that his partner, Aqib Talib, is finally going to return to the field this week after missing multiple games with a hip injury. It will be important for Dennard to be on the field for next week’s showdown with the Broncos, so if he needs some rest this week, then so be it.
