New England Patriots: Injury Updates

Earlier this week, it was reported that tight end Rob Gronkowski was “likely” to be cleared by doctors, in time to play in Sunday’s game. But today a conflicting report surfaced, as Ed Werder of tweeted out that the Patriots “no longer expect him to play”. Obviously, this isn’t good news for a struggling Patriot offense, and the challenge mounts even greater for Tom Brady and company, as they will be faced with the challenge of keeping up with the explosive Saints offense.

In other injury news, defensive tackle Tommy Kelly has been ruled out, due to a knee injury that he suffered in the second half of last weeks game in Cincinnati. After losing Vince Wilfork to an Achilles injury in week four, this news isn’t going to help a defensive unit that will be charged with attempting to slow down Drew Brees’ high flying Saints offense. Kelly is an extremely talented interior lineman, and the drop-off between him and (his backup) undrafted free agent Chris Jones is huge.

Stevan Ridley missed last weeks game due to a thigh injury that he suffered while in Atlanta, but all signs point towards his return here in week six. He is officially listed as questionable, but there have been numerous reports concluding that he will in fact be with the team on Sunday afternoon. Ridley practiced with the team all week long, which always is a positive sign for a player recovering from an injury.
