Last night, the Patriots escaped the Georgia Dome with a 30-23 win over the Falcons, but it may have come at a very steep price. It was reported late last night by the Boston Globe’s Shalise Manza Young that defensive tackle Vince Wilfork has suffered a torn Achilles, and will likely miss the rest of the 2013 season.
This is horrible news for the Patriots, as Wilfork is not only the heart and soul their defensive unit, but he is one of the best defensive tackles in the game. There is not one single way that the Patriots will able to replace Wilfork, but they will have to find someone to come in and help New England adjust to the absence of the big man. CFL star Armond Armstead could be the guy that absorbs a lot of Wilfork’s snaps, but he is not yet healthy enough to return to the football field. Undrafted free agent Joe Vellano played very well in last night’s win over Atlanta, but once again he is no Wilfork.
Wilfork was such a dominant presence in the run game for New England that a decline in the success of their run defense is inevitable, but it will be the job of the Patriots coaching staff to do as much as possible to compensate for Wilfork’s absence.
