New York Jets Outlast Buffalo Bills

What was pegged to be a boring game by some turned out to be an interesting showdown between the two rookie quarterbacks Gino Smith and EJ Manuel. Smith was able to lead the Jets to a 27-20 victory after making some impressive throws to finish the game 16/29 with 331 yards, 2 TDs, a rushing TD and 2 picks. Santonio Holmes emerged as Smith’s favorite target, tallying 5 receptions for 154 yards and a TD. Holmes earned 69 of those yards on an impressive deep throw by Smith, where Holmes blew past Buffalo’s safeties to put the Jets ahead by 7 in the fourth quarter. Smith had a knack for big plays, also hitting Stephen Hill on a 51 yard pass for a TD and averaging 11.4 yards per pass on the game. The win puts the Jets at 2-1 and third place in the AFC East.

There were several weak points from both teams during the game; one being their inability to convert on 3rd downs. The Bills finished 4/17 and the Jetss 5/14. The Bills also need to address their abysmal offensive line which gave up a whopping 8 sacks for a loss of 35 yards. With an offensive line this bad, it’s no wonder EJ Manuel was only able to complete 19 of his 41 pass attempts. In a tight game, the sacks and the incredible number of penalties made a difference. The Jets had an astounding 20 penalties worth 168 yards, while the Bills had 7 for 87. The Bills will try to rebound from this tough loss next week at home against the defending Super Bowl champion Ravens, while the Jets look to put together a win streak when they take on the 2-1 Titans in Tennessee.
