The Miami Dolphins are interested in taking a flier on Da’Rick Rogers, who was released by the Buffalo Bills earlier this week after quickly falling into the doghouse. Rogers reportedly responded poorly to criticism, and he also frustrated the Bills coaching staff by not lining up in the right spots. Although Rogers has plenty of talent, he is also incredibly immature and has a myriad of character concerns. The Tennessee Volunteers kicked Rogers off of the team prior to last season, and Rogers could have easily been kicked off sooner. Those character issues led to Rogers being picked up by the Bills as an undrafted free agent, and his prompt release and the fact that nobody claimed him off of waivers shows that his talent hasn’t been enough to make up for his awful intangibles.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the Miami Dolphins worked out Rogers yesterday, and we’ll see if that leads to a contract offer from the Dolphins. This is a team that is well-stocked at the top of the depth chart at wide receiver, but they could use another player as depth due to injuries early in training camp.
That said, Da’Rick Rogers doesn’t look like he’s worthy of a spot on the 53-man roster, and I think the ideal situation is for him to hone his skills and get his head on straight on the practice squad. One of the reasons why Rogers was released is because he didn’t show up well enough in August, and Rogers is a very raw receiver. He definitely has talent, but I’d consider him a project both mentally and physically.
