Patriots sign Gilbert Pena, cut Brice Schwab

The New England Patriots got down to 75 men on the roster yesterday, but they made one final cut about three hours after the 4 p.m. ET deadline. The Patriots decided to claim defensive tackle Gilbert Pena off of waivers, and I was disappointed that they cut offensive lineman Brice Schwab in order to make the move. While I doubt Schwab would have even made the practice squad and Pena might have better prospects for the p-squad, Schwab showed up really well against the Philadelphia Eagles and Detroit Lions this preseason. In my view, he deserved a fourth preseason game.

Pena is an interesting addition for the Patriots, and it will be interesting to see if he can push for a practice squad spot. The Patriots placed Cory Grissom on the injured reserve, and it was a little bit of a surprise to see them redshirt Grissom. I thought he was 53-man roster material this year with Armond Armstead (now on the reserve/PUP list) in question due to an infection, and I thought it would be Marcus Forston and Grissom on the final roster with Joe Vellano on the practice squad.

But it looks like Gilbet Pena- a UDFA out of Ole Miss- is Grissom’s “replacement” at defensive tackle on the roster, and we’ll see if he can impress against the New York Giants.
