Jets replace Billy Cundiff with Dan Carpenter

The New York Jets are giving Nick Folk some new competition at kicker after releasing Billy Cundiff in favor of Dan Carpenter, and this is the fourth kicking competition that Cundiff has lost in a year. Cundiff has been released by the Baltimore Ravens, Washington Redskins, San Francisco 49ers, and now the Jets following that missed field goal against the New England Patriots, and it is hard to believe that the Patriots once worked him out early last season.

Under these circumstances, you can’t help but feel that Cundiff has been dealt a heavy dose of bad luck, because he nailed all three of his field goal attempts this preseason for the Jets. Cundiff used to be a valuable kicker in this league and still has an exceptionally strong leg, but he proves that a kicker can lose it all once they have lost their confidence.

Dan Carpenter heads back to the AFC East, and he is no stranger to bouncing around either. Even though he had a stable, successful career with the Miami Dolphins, the Dolphins decided that Carpenter had become too expensive for the organization to keep and opted to release him for rookie kicker Caleb Sturgis. Carpenter recently lost the Arizona Cardinals kicking competition to incumbent and veteran Jay Feely, so last year’s 81.5% kicker will look to usurp Folk in New York.
