New England Patriots release Jason Vega

After signing UDFA tight end Evan Landi, the New England Patriots needed to cut somebody in order to put their roster back to 90 men. Unfortunately, the Patriots ended up cutting a Brockton, Massachusetts native whom many of us were rooting for, and I thought Vega would sneak into the practice squad despite a quiet camp. The former CFL star made some clutch plays against the Philadelphia Eagles, but I wonder if he could be back later on since the motivation for this release may have been injury. Vega missed Monday’s practice with an injury before receiving his walking papers yesterday, so that’s something to keep an eye on.

Of course, Vega’s track record in the CFL could lead him to be picked up by somebody sooner, but this looks like a Matt Stankiewitch situation where the Patriots cut an injured guy with the desire to sign them later when they are healthy again. He showed some promise in the preseason game with three tackles, including a play that stopped the Eagles short on third down.

Vega reportedly has a knee injury and had to undergo an MRI, but we don’t have word of the results. I doubt any other team picks up an injured player who hasn’t made much noise, so I expect Vega to end up back with the  football team he grew up around.
