The New York Jets received some pleasant news on the injury front today, as starting running back Chris Ivory finally participated in team drills after finally returning for individual drills yesterday. Ivory’s hamstring injury definitely on the mend, and he should be healthy enough to play in the Jets next preseason game. However, the Jets could just bench him in order not to risk aggravating Ivory’s injury, and the most likely scenario might be for the Jets to severely limit Ivory’s carries on Saturday.
ESPN New York’s Rich Cimini tweeted that Ivory received the first two carries during team drills, and my prediction is that we see Chris Ivory notch a couple of carries in the Jets next preseason game. It looks like he is almost at full strength and is ready to get a couple of preseason carries in.
The Jets rushing attack was poor last season, and it was absolutely atrocious during Week 1 of the preseason. Bilal Powell is clearly not a starting caliber running back in this league, while Ivory has high upside now that he is getting his first chance to be a lead back. The New Orleans Saints, for some odd reason, liked to play inferior running backs over Ivory instead of giving Ivory a chance to put his impressive numbers in limited carries to work on a bigger scale. Ivory now has that chance with the Jets, and he is going to be a very important skill position player for a Jets team that needs him to be “the guy” at running back.
