Austin Collie recently received full medical clearance for his head and knee injuries, and thus began working out for teams. Both teams he has worked out for, the New England Patriots and San Francisco 49ers, are among the league’s best and Super Bowl contenders, and those are the teams that he would likely want to play for. They would give Collie a chance at not only winning a ring, but also playing as a No. 4 receiver and moving the chains when called upon. If he can stay healthy, Collie could see an increasing role, and both the Patriots and 49ers are teams that could use another stable option at the wide receiver position.
It seems like Collie would fit the 49ers better, because he works the slot and the Pats already have Danny Amendola locked in. But Collie would be a backup to Amendola if signed, so it could make sense. Collie would come cheap, at a no-risk one-year deal, and he has upside if the 27-year-old can stay healthy.
It was the USA Today’s Mike Garafolo who reported the news of Collie’s workout with the 49ers yesterday, and we’ll see if he gets a contract offer to play for the Niners. Collie is one of my favorite players in the league, and I hope he is able to successfully hit the comeback trail and be a productive receiver again. He is one of those players you root hard for, and it’s always crushing to see a guy like Collie’s career derailed and almost stopped due to multiple, severe concussions. One thing that stands out to Collie is his self-accountability, and his drive and work ethic have been absolutely incredible.
