New England Patriots explosive middle linebacker Brandon Spikes is reporting to minicamp today, per a source close to the Boston Herald’s Jeff Howe. Spikes, who is heading into a contract year, decided to skip OTAs (which are not mandatory, while minicamp is), and this was met with a wide variety of reactions. Since he is heading into a contract year, some fans wondered if Spikes was trying to hold out or leverage himself against the Patriots in some way, but reports afterwards stated that Spikes just felt like working out on his own would be better; he’s not the only play in the league who has felt this way.
Spikes was actually working out in Florida and trying to increase his athletic ability in order to be better in coverage. Although Spikes is an excellent run defender, he is very poor in coverage, and he will need to improve in that and prove he is a three-down linebacker in this league in order to get the kind of money he wants in free agency next offseason.
It’s great to hear that the reports that Spikes would be reporting to minicamp are true, and he is already reporting and ready to participate in today’s physicals. Minicamp ends on the 13th of June, and the real workouts begin tomorrow. We’ll see if there are any early signs of improvement in Spikes’s athleticism, and it will be interesting to see how many reps he and Dane Fletcher- returning from an ACL tear last season in August- split at MLB.
