The New England Patriots will have some tough cuts to make at the wide receiver position this offseason, and I am hoping that Julian Edelman does not end up being one of those cuts. He showed much-improved long speed last season that allowed him to become more of a playmaker and a significantly better wide receiver overall. However, injuries have still been a big issue for Edelman, as he broke his hand and foot last season. Edelman recently suffered a setback on his broken foot, and Mike Reiss of ESPN Boston reports that Edelman is still wearing a walking boot on his right foot.
ESPN Boston once wrote that the only locks at the wide receiver position for the Patriots are second-round pick “X” receiver Aaron Dobson and Wes Welker‘s replacement in the slot in former St. Louis Rams standout Danny Amendola. Edelman is the only Patriots receiver remaining from last season and is well-liked by the team and the fans, but he needs to get healthy and stay healthy.
Edelman was re-signed to a cheap, one-year deal this offseason by the Patriots after receiving minimal interest in free agency due to his foot injury. Only the New York Giants showed interest, and they did nothing with Edelman after working him out. Edelman’s deal is filled with incentives based on health and he should make the 53-man roster, but he is no lock. Let’s hope Edelman can get healthy quickly, and he has a big training camp ahead of him against the likes of Donald Jones and Lavelle Hawkins.
