2013 NFL Draft: New England Patriots Select Southern Miss Jamie Collins

The New England Patriots are much more enthusiastic in this draft after acquiring four draft picks from a trade with the Minnesota Vikings and with the selection of linebacker Jamie Collins. Sure Bill Belichick looked confident and happy in a short video of the Patriots draft room via Patriots Today.

The opportunity to capitalize on those extra draft picks is big and Belichick should not miss. Although, I didn’t like seeing wide receiver Robert Woods, cornerback Johnthan Banks, defensive end Cornellius (Tank) Carradine or defensive tackle Kawann Short gone before the Patriots had a chance to grab any of them.

I have to say it is a surprise as I though Bill Belichick would be drafting a wide receiver or a defensive back to supplement our cornerback position. The Southern Miss product is a 6’3”, 250 lbs linebacker with a long and lean frame that stands up as pass rusher. What I like the most is his speed and long stride to close on quarterbacks, which will be an explosive weapon along with Dont’a Hightower and Jerod Mayo.

Collins is a hybrid defense end/linebacker and banked 20 tackles for loss and 10 sacks for the Golden Eagles during his first-team All-Conference USA senior season. His agility and length is a tribute on a 3-4 scheme.
