The New York Jets have two high picks in the first round of the 2013 NFL Draft, and it sounds like they could take one on a defensive tackle if the right guy is on the board. ESPN New York’s Rich Cimini believes DT is a possibility for the Jets, and now CBS Sports NFL Insider Jason La Canfora is tweeting his belief that the Jets are “in play” for former Utah Utes star defensive tackle Star Lotulelei. If he falls out of the top five, then I could definitely see the Jets taking the blue-chip prospect.
Barkevious Mingo has been the player most often mocked to the New York Jets, but Cimini tweeted earlier that the Jets aren’t actually as interested in Mingo as “some people think”. Still, Mingo is very likely the pick for the Jets at number nine, especially if Lotulelei isn’t available by then.
Sharrif Floyd is viewed by some draft analysts as the superior player to Lotulelei, so the former Florida Gators standout is also a possible pick for the Jets if he does fall and the Jets are indeed interested in a defensive tackle. What a Canfora tweeted about the Jets and Lotulelei is especially interesting, “One player who hasn’t been linked to Jets much is DT Star Lotuleie, but they spent lot of time on.” That smells like a reverse smokescreen. The Jets could have been diverting interest from Lotulelei and the DT position whilst at the same time showing significant interest in the Utah product. This is an interesting draft-day development to watch for.
Cimini and La Canfora both agree on Lotulelei being a possibility for the Jets, so I would definitely put at least a little bit of weight into this.
