The New England Patriots will likely take a wide receiver or cornerback in the first round of the 2013 NFL Draft, and the most recent mock draft on the FanSided.com mainpage has the Patriots taking Washington Huskies cornerback Desmond Trufant once again. Trufant seems to be one of the most mocked prospects to the Patriots in the first round, with the other Mississippi State Bulldogs cornerback Johnthan Banks.
Those two prospects would be good fits for the Patriots, but it is more likely that Banks is available and not Trufant. Both players have pretty much flipped places on draft boards, because Banks used to be regarded as a top 15 draft prospect with Trufant garnering a late first round grade. Now, Trufant is a top 20 prospect and Banks a late first-round pick.
Some of that has to do with their performances at the 2013 NFL Combine, because Trufant had an excellent forty time whereas Banks checked in much slower than expected. Both players fit the Pats with their size and strength, and it was interesting to see that gap in both CB’s forty times, because Banks looked like he was burned less in college than the Washington standout.
At the end of the day, I think Trufant won’t be available for the Pats and won’t make it outside of the top 20. It is certainly within reason for him to slip to the 29th pick, but if the Patriots pick a corner in the first round it will probably be Johnthan Banks.
