The New York Jets are looking closely at potential value signings in the wide receiver market in players like Braylon Edwards (re-sign), Brandon Gibson, and Mohamed Massaquoi of the Cleveland Browns. According to Rich Cimini of ESPN New York, the Jets have interest in signing Massaquoi in addition to interest in Rams wide receiver Brandon Gibson. Cimini adds they “could wait out initial wave of free agency.”
Massaquoi is a big wide receiver who is just 26, but he has never caught 40 passes in a single season. He could be a nice signing as a No. 3 wide receiver for the Jets, and Massaquoi was never expected to stay with the Cleveland Browns. It will be interesting to see if any other teams show interest in him, because the Jets are the only team reportedly interested in signing Massaquoi.
Interestingly enough, I did see a post on ESPN Boston by Field Yates stating that the New England Patriots could view Massaquoi as one of their top targets this free agency. While he can stretch the field and has good size, I have a feeling the Patriots will try to go after somebody better- Brandon Gibson is a more attractive option in my opinion.
Massaquoi would be an interesting signing for the Jets if the market thins out, because I think their top target is Gibson. Edwards is somebody they know they can keep on the cheap, but they should still sign him early on to a cheap deal (he has a good rapport with Mark Sanchez) and then target Gibson as Plan A and Massaquoi as Plan B in case Gibson becomes too expensive.
