St. Louis Rams wide receiver Brandon Gibson is basically gone from the Rams organization, and a large part of this is due to all the interest Gibson has been accumulating in free agency. He has earned interest from a few teams, and he has especially made rounds with interest in the AFC East from the Miami Dolphins and New York Jets.
We knew Gibson was receiving interest from the Jets earlier today thanks to a report from the New York Post, but we didn’t know the Jets interest was this serious. According to Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News, the Jets “will pursue” Brandon Gibson this offseason, and a source told Mehta that the Jets interest in the Rams wideout is “serious”.
Gibson would be an immense upgrade for a Jets wide receiver corps that sorely needs one, and he would be a big help to Mark Sanchez. If the Jets are able to sign him, then he could end up being their No. 2 wide receiver, and Gibson has some intriguing upside as a playmaker at the position.
Although Gibson was expected to be a value signing a week ago, interest has really picked up for Gibson. There could be a bidding war for his services, and it will be interesting to see if Gibson ends up falling out of the Jets price range. For some reason, I think his price will match the value he would bring the Jets to the table as the No. 2 guy, and maybe that’s because I think the Jets have the most serious interest- other teams seem to be looking at him as a backup plan. The Jets could really use a wideout like Gibson, and the $3.8 million in cap space cleared by Sione Pouha’s release will help the Jets in this endeavor.
